A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 8

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 8
-Roy Lessin, Meeting in the Meadow

O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens! Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength, Because of Your enemies, That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.
O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth (Psalm 8:1, 9)!

Growing up, I never liked my name. It was too short and didn’t mean anything. One day I took the first letter of my middle name (Allan) and the first letter of my last name (Lessin), joined them to my first name and came up with Royal. I didn’t change my name to Royal, but I liked the meaning!

I love every name God has! The Scriptures are packed with them. He has a multitude of names because they help us understand who He is and what He does. His name is honorable, powerful, noble, and glorious.

Here are a few examples of names only God can be called:
  • Elohim-The triune Creator.
  • El Shaddai-The One with all power. The Almighty.
  • Adonai-The Lord with absolute authority.
  • Jehovah-Raah-The Lord your Shepherd.
  • Jehovah Rapha-The Lord who heals you.
  • Jehovah Tsidkenu-The Lord your righteousness.
  • Jehovah Shalom-The Lord your perfect peace.

Meditate upon His names and your faith will grow.
There is salvation because there is a Savior.
There is healing because there is a Healer.
There is comfort because there is a Comforter.
There is help because there is a Helper.
There is provision because there is a Provider.

Insight: When you have the Lord, you have it all, because HE is all you need.
