A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 62

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 62
-Roy Lessin, Meeting in the Meadow

Truly my soul silently waits for God;
From Him comes my salvation (Psalm 62:1).

We often associate waiting with anxiety. We anxiously wait in traffic trying to get to the airport on time. We anxiously wait in line to buy concert tickets before they sell out. We anxiously wait to hear from the doctor about the results of our biopsy.

The word “waits” that we read in the first verse of Psalm 62 is preceded by the word “silently”. There is a treasure in these two words for our souls to fully embrace. It means our souls can enjoy quiet trust that is free of panic. Anxiety is replaced by peace. God never wants us to be anxious or worried about anything He is doing in our lives, or when He will do it.

I remember visiting my dad’s office one day and reading a small note pinned to his bulletin board. It said, “Until I will be still!” When I asked him the meaning of the note he replied, “Many months ago, as I was praying about a specific need I had, the Lord assured me that He would answer my request. The other day, while in prayer, I reminded the Lord about my request and asked when He would bring the answer. I wrote down His reply. “It’s on the note that you read on the bulletin board’.”

Insight: Trust is faith’s way of saying, “The Lord provides…in His time!”

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 61

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 61
-Roy Lessin, Meeting in the Meadow

Hear my cry, O God; Attend to my prayer.
From the end of the earth I will cry to You,
When my heart is overwhelmed;
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
For You have been a shelter for me,
A strong tower from the enemy.
I will abide in Your tabernacle forever;
I will trust in the shelter of Your wings (Psalm 61:1-4).

In the first four verses of Psalm 61 we are reminded of something very wonderful about prayer, it is personal! David says to God... “hear my cry”, “attend to my prayer”, “I will cry to You”, “my heart is overwhelmed”, “lead me”, “higher than I”, a shelter for me”, “I will abide”, “I will trust”.

Every follower of the Lord is known by the Lord. Every cry is heard. Every tear is seen. Every heartache is understood. Every burden is carried.

Every weary footstep will find higher ground. Every vulnerable pilgrim will find a hiding place. Every trusting soul that walks in the heat of the desert sun will know the cooling shadow of His protective wings.

Our faith, our trust, our confidence is not in a God of empty promises, broken vows, forgotten covenants, misplaced provisions, or appointments that keep Him too busy to fit us into His schedule.

Insight: Yes, the One whose eyes are on the sparrow is the One whose eyes are also upon you.

Insight: If you ever see a lily toiling or a bird storing up food in a barn, then you will know that the time to worry has arrived.

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 60

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 60
-Roy Lessin, Meeting in the Meadow

O God, You have cast us off; You have broken us down; You have been displeased; Oh, restore us again! You have made the earth tremble; You have broken it; Heal its breaches, for it is shaking. You have shown Your people hard things; You have made us drink the wine of confusion.You have given a banner to those who fear You, That it may be displayed because of the truth. That Your beloved may be delivered, Save with Your right hand, and hear me. Give us help from trouble, For the help of man is useless. Through God we will do valiantly, For it is He who shall tread down our enemies (Psalm 60:1-5, 11-12).

Why do so many people struggle with loneliness, emptiness, and discontentment? Why is it so hard to find true meaning and purpose in life? It is because most people live without possessing the thing they were made for.

A bird was made to fly, but how can it without wings? A fish was made to swim, but how can it without water? We were made to know God personally, but how can we without His presence in our lives?

There is nothing worse than living life without God’s presence! The emptiness in our hearts can never be filled without Him. Without His light our darkness is so dark, without His truth our thinking is so confused, without His peace our ways are so restless.

Psalm 60, like other psalms, reveals God’s dealings with Israel and how the nation reeled whenever the Lord withdrew His hand of favor and blessing because of their disobedience.

Oh, the beauty, the wonder, and the joy of having the presence of the Lord living in our hearts. He is the ANSWER to all that concerns us. He is enough! Consider the conversation Moses had with God…

But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” So God said, “I will certainly be with you. And this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain” (Exodus 3:11-12).

Insight: When Jesus died on the cross for our sins, He also died for the separation from God that our sins caused.

Insight: It’s your sins that have cut you off from God. Because of your sins, he has turned away and will not listen anymore (Isaiah 59:2 NLT).

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 59

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 59
-Roy Lessin, Meeting in the Meadow

I will sing of Your power;
Yes, I will sing aloud of Your mercy in the morning;
For You have been my defense
And refuge in the day of my trouble.
To You, O my Strength, I will sing praises;
For God is my defense, My God of mercy (Psalm 59:16-17).

When reading the Psalms it doesn’t take long to discover that David had a lot of enemies. Thousands of years have passed since David wrote Psalm 59, yet from a spiritual perspective, we face many of these enemies.

Today there is still an enemy to resist, hardships to endure, and evil to overcome, yet the Lord has not left us defenseless. Daily we have His full spiritual armor as a covering, and complete access to Him in prayer. Thankfully, we also have the same strength and power provided by the same Defender that David had.

Battle Proclamation

God, You are my Warrior! The battle is Yours.
You reign. Rule. You are Victor.
You have never lost a battle, are the final word in every conflict, and conquer every foe.

You can deliver with many or with few, bring down a defiant Goliath or strike fear in a hostile army and send it to flight, flatten a walled stronghold or break the fetters off those who are bound.

You are almighty, no one is stronger;
You sit upon heaven's throne, no one is higher;
You know all things, no one is wiser.
You know exactly what to do and have a perfect strategy—when You move no one can stop You; when you speak no one can silence You;
when You use Your two-edged sword no one can disarm You.

I am covered in Your mercies, clothed in Your righteousness, dressed in Your armor. I march under Your banner, wave Your flag, sing Your song, gird myself with Your truth, and abide under the shelter of Your wings.

You are my dwelling place, I am at rest;
You are my hiding place, I am secure;
You are my fortress, I am safe;
You are my tower, I am sheltered;
You are my shield, I am protected.

I advance in Your strength, stand in Your authority, and pray in Your all-conquering name.

Thank You, Mighty God, that the battle, the weapons, the strategy and the victory are all Yours.

You are the One who:
will raise up a standard against the enemy when he comes in like a flood;
will not allow any weapon that is formed against me to prosper;
will put the enemy to flight!

Father, I pray and proclaim this in the name of Him who is seated at Your right hand, the One who triumphed over sin, death, and the powers of darkness. The One whose blood redeems, whose stripes heal, whose grace sustains, whose hands uphold, and whose love never fails…the King of kings, the name above all names, Jesus Christ the Lord!

Insight: Prayer isn’t about the power of the one asking, it’s about the power of the One answering.

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 58

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 58
-Roy Lessin, Meeting in the Meadow

Then at last everyone will say,“There truly is a reward for those who live for God; surely there is a God who judges justly here on earth” (Psalm 58:11 NLT).

In Psalm 58 we discover more about how the enemy works and how the human heart resists the ways of God, while manifesting the characteristics of wickedness.

The Psalm ends with the reminder that better things are yet to come. As we await the coming of the Lord with patient endurance, we can be certain that God’s righteous justice will have the final say over all things.

The importance of patient endurance brings to mind the following story…

Back when foreign travel was done by ship, a missionary was returning home after being away for many years. He was standing on deck when his homeland came into view. His excitement grew as he began to realize he would soon be placing his feet upon the land he loved so much.

As the ship docked the missionary noticed a large cheering crowd gathered to greet the ship’s arrival. His heart beat faster. Soon balloons filled the sky as a band began to play. To add to the excitement, a red carpet was rolled out upon the gangplank. And then it happened! As the missionary turned to exit the ship, ropes were placed on both sides of the deck to keep back the passengers. Suddenly, the crowd cheered even louder as a man began to descend the red-carpeted gangplank.

Realizing that all the commotion was for a celebrity, the missionary grew sad and quietly hung his head in disappointment. It was in that moment that he heard the voice of the Lord lovingly speaking to his hurting heart…

“There is no one to greet you. No red carpet. No balloons. No band. No cheering crowd for you. It’s okay. Just remember, you’re not home yet!”

Insight: In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ (1 Peter 1:6-7 NKJV).

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 57

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 57
-Roy Lessin, Meeting in the Meadow

My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and give praise (Psalm 57:7).

God’s desire is that our hearts are set upon Him in the same way His heart is set upon us. That’s how a love relationship deepens and grows. The phrase “with all your heart” comes from the heart of God to our hearts.

A steadfast heart is fixed, it is locked in. It is not divided, confused, or uncertain. It has a single purpose—follows one Shepherd, raises one Banner, serves one Master, honors one King, fulfills one Mission, believes one Truth, walks one Way, seeks one Prize, and sings one Song.

Here are a few statements from the apostle Paul that reveal a heart fixed upon the Lord:
  • For me to live is Christ.
  • I consider all things to be loss in comparison to the surpassing value of the knowledge of Christ my Lord.
  • My aim is to know Him.
  • This one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on…
  • I want to take hold of that for which I was even taken hold of by Christ.

Insight: When a heart is fixed, it’s fixed on Jesus. He is the fount from whom all blessings flow. Consider these thoughts from the book Abba Cry written by Don Lessin…

“Jesus must never become the means to an end. His must be the loudest voice within you. What He thinks, how He feels, and what He says must be what matters most in the center of who we are. Jesus is the way into all God has for you and wants to be to you.”

“If God were to ask you, “To what degree can you function without My approval?” May your answer be, “I cannot live without Your approval.’”

“Christianity is a relationship with God. It is not a system. The deeper that relationship becomes, the deeper will be your desire to live with His smile upon you. Oh, the beauty upon a person who has a growing relationship with Jesus Christ, and who is daily seeking His approval—it is a treasure, a beautiful pearl!”

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 56

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 56
-Roy Lessin, Meeting in the Meadow

Whenever I am afraid,
I will trust in You. In God (I will praise His word),
In God I have put my trust;
I will not fear. What can flesh do to me?
In God (I will praise His word), In the Lord (I will praise His word), In God I have put my trust;
I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? (Psalm 56:3-4, 10-11)

Growing up, I faced different things that frightened me—being alone in the dark, getting lost, Halloween masks, getting beat up by a bully, atomic bomb drills, and the list could go on. My attempts at overcoming my fears included putting on a night light, crying, running as fast as I could go, and hiding under a desk.

As I entered my teens, I discovered new things that frightened me—what to say on a date, getting drafted, going to college, and deciding what to do with my life. My attempts at overcoming these fears came down to one thing, alcohol. It turned out that alcohol was only a short-lived hiding place from my fears but did nothing to free me from those fears.

Fears deepen when we realize we are not in control. Insecurity, uncertainty, and the brevity of life can keep a multitude of people bound with fear. As believers, fear is not our shepherd. We must never allow fear to lead us, or to tell us what will happen up ahead.

Here are three important things to remember about overcoming fear:
  1. Don’t put your trust in anything that can—break, come to an end, be stolen, change, become weak, decline, lose its value, rust, decay, burn, or die.
  2. Find out from Scripture who God is, what He has promised, and what He will do. (A wonderful book to read on this topic is Knowledge of the Holy by A. W. Tozer).
  3. Put your COMPLETE TRUST in GOD! Never forget that He is your Shepherd and He is in control of your future.
Insight: Because we are human, we will face fears. Because God is God, He can deliver us from our fears and keep us in His perfect peace.

Insight: Trust in the Lord includes confidence in the Lord and dependency upon the Lord. If God has said it, trust every word. He will do it. He cannot fail.

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 55

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 55
-Roy Lessin, Meeting in the Meadow

Give ear to my prayer, O God,
And do not hide Yourself from my supplication.
Attend to me, and hear me;
As for me, I will call upon God,
And the Lord shall save me.
Evening and morning and at noon
I will pray, and cry aloud,
And He shall hear my voice.
But I will trust in You (Psalm 55:1-2, 16-17, 23).

The Scriptures above have been gathered from various places throughout Psalm 55. Their focus is upon prayer in the midst of difficult times. How wonderful it is to find that the final words of Psalm 55 end with a prayer of trust.

Regardless of our circumstances, our difficulties, or our trials it is always a good thing to put our trust in the Lord.

A prayer of trust for you to pray is written below.

Prayer of Trust

LORD, I trust in You. I believe in You.
I hope in You. You are my confidence and my assurance. I lean on You because You are my Rock. I depend on You because You are my Provider. I delight in You because You are the joy of my life. My heart rests in You. My faith responds to You.
My soul rejoices in You.
You are the true God who cannot lie and will never fail.

You are the Lord, the Almighty God, the Creator of all things. You are my Lord, my God, and my Maker.
You are my Keeper, and I am secure in You. You are my Heavenly Father, and I am cared for by You. You are my Counselor, and I am guided by You. You are my Shelter, and I am safe.
I trust You in my life-the wisdom of Your ways, the blessings of Your favor, the sufficiency of Your grace, the power of Your Spirit, and the endurance that comes from Your strength. I trust You. My mind trusts in You. My will trusts in You. My soul trusts in You. From the depths of my being, I trust You. Amen.

Insight: You can trust the One who created you, died for you, cares for you, intercedes for you, loves you, adopted you, claims you, watches over you, defends you, strengthens you, blesses you, equips you, leads you, will never leave you.

Insight: Trust the Lord—for all things, in all things, with all things, through all things, above all things!

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 54

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 54
-Roy Lessin, Meeting in the Meadow

He will repay my enemies for their evil. Cut them off in Your truth (Psalm 54:5).

Psalm 54 uses one word to tell us what has created the differences between the wisdom of the world and the wisdom of God. The word is TRUTH!

In the garden of life, TRUTH is the soil from which all Godly wisdom grows. Lies, errors, falsehood, deceit, and deception are weeds that want to choke off the life that TRUTH produces. Here is a list of Scriptures that will help us place the right priorities upon TRUTH:

  • Know the TRUTH- John 8:32
  • Practice the TRUTH- John 3:21
  • Worship in TRUTH- John 4:23
  • Speak the TRUTH- John 8:46
  • Be guided by TRUTH- John 16:13
  • Obey the TRUTH- Romans 2:8
  • Do nothing against the TRUTH- 2 Corinthians 13:8
  • Love the TRUTH- 2 Thessalonians 2:10
  • Believe the TRUTH- 2 Thessalonians 2:12
  • Welcome the TRUTH- 2 Timothy 3:8
  • Be established in TRUTH- 2 Peter 1:12
  • Walk in TRUTH- 2 John 1:4
Insight: God the Father is Truth (Jeremiah 10:10), Jesus is the TRUTH (John 14:6), the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of TRUTH (John 14:17), and the Word of God is TRUTH (John 17:17).

Insight: Walk where TRUTH takes you today—in your words, your choices, your actions, your attitudes—in all your expressions of love.

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 53

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 53
-Roy Lessin, Meeting in the Meadow

The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God” (Psalm 53:1).

The Bible puts wisdom into two categories. One is called the “wisdom of the world,” the other is called the “wisdom of God.” These two types of wisdom have very different world views and will produce very different outcomes.

The wisdom of the world considers the message of the cross to be foolishness. God, however, considers the wisdom of the world foolish. The wisdom of the world considers the gospel to be weakness. God, however, considers the gospel to be the power of God unto salvation. Those who receive and believe in the wisdom of God will see life from God’s point of view.

God’s wisdom brings to us many benefits and keeps us from many harms.

The Wise Are Well Equipped
The wise have:
Ears to hear what the Spirit is saying.
Eyes to see what the Light is revealing.
Lips to speak what the Truth is declaring.
Hands to applaud how the Lord is working.
Feet to walk where the Shepherd is leading.
Faith to receive what the Father is giving.
Hope to await their Master’s returning!

Insight: From God’s perspective those who walk according to the wisdom of the world are truly fools. What makes them doubly foolish is that they consider themselves wise.

Insight: “This is the state of all creatures, whether men or angels; as they make not themselves, so they enjoy nothing from themselves; if they are great, it must be only as great receivers of the gifts of God; their power can only be so much of the divine power acting in them; their wisdom can be only so much of the divine wisdom shining within them; and their light and glory, only so much of the light and glory of God shining upon them.”  -William Law

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 52

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 52
-Roy Lessin, Meeting in the Meadow

But I am like a green (flourishing, thriving) olive tree in the house of God; I trust in the mercy (faithfulness, steadfast love) of God forever and ever (Psalm 52:8 Expanded).

Scripture loves using creation to help us understand spiritual truth and Kingdom principles.

Throughout the Old and New Testaments, we read about the sun and moon, the stars, the mountains and the seas, birds and horses, fish and camels, plants and trees.

We have some beautiful evergreen trees in our backyard that delight me every time I look at them.

I have often thought how tough it must be for a tree to survive considering all they have to endure—including constant temperature changes, winds, hail, ice, severe thunderstorms, and drought.

What would you think if someone said to you, “You remind me of an olive tree.” Well, take it as a complement! That’s what David said about himself. Psalm 52 references the olive tree as a way of explaining how our lives are impacted by being in the presence of the Lord.

Here are some reasons why David likened himself to the olive tree:

  • The olive tree is an evergreen. An evergreen tree symbolizes endurance, resilience, and everlasting life. For believers, everlasting life is Christ’s life in us.
  • The olive tree flourishes and thrives because of the life within it. Regardless of the weather conditions that surround it the olive tree stands strong, and so will we as we remain rooted and grounded in Him.
  • The olive tree doesn’t just look good, it’s productive, bearing fruit in due season. It is the fruit of the Spirit that will bring others to glorify the Lord as they see Him working through us.
  • The olive tree is a messenger of hope and encouragement. It was a branch from the olive tree that the dove brought back to Noah before he left the ark.
  • The olive tree carries in its fruit the olive oil that brought light to the temple and the anointing oil for ministry. The light of our lives and the impact of our ministry comes from the Holy Spirit.

Insight: In Bible times the olive tree was one of the most valued and useful trees in the land of Israel. In the Lord, every believer is precious in God’s sight and is called to be a valued and useful vessel, pouring forth the treasures of God’s kingdom through the life-giving presence of the Holy Spirit.

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 51

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 51
-Roy Lessin, Meeting in the Meadow

Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your lovingkindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity And cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sin is always before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight—That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge.
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And uphold me by Your generous Spirit (Psalm 51:
1-4, 7, 10-12).

Oh, the good news that God is merciful!  Greater still, that He is merciful to us. Let our hearts celebrate, to the fullest measure, God’s mercies in our lives.

He is as merciful to us today as He was yesterday, and His mercies will welcome us to a new day tomorrow morning when we arise.

God’s mercies are tender mercies, lovingkindness mercies, and compassion mercies. His mercies bring to us the grace of forgiveness, the grace of forgiveness brings cleansing, and the grace of cleansing brings to our hearts the deliverance from all condemnation.

Without God’s mercies we would be overcome and destroyed by the guilt of sin. Our bank accounts couldn’t purchase our redemption, our good deeds couldn’t balance the scales of justice, our sacrifices couldn’t stay the hand of judgment.

God’s mercy is not saying to us:
  • That’s okay, try harder next time.
  • I’ll look the other way this time.
  • No problem, no one is perfect.
  • Win some, lose some.
  • Don’t be so hard on yourself, I know you’re a good person at heart.

God’s mercy is saying to us:
  • I know you’ve sinned against me.
  • I will not give you what you deserve.
  • My Son took your judgement upon Himself so you could be forgiven.
  • His blood will wash you whiter than snow.

Insights:
God has promised to supply all our need’s through His riches in Christ.
God has promised to bless us with all the spiritual blessings that are in Christ.
God has promised to forgive all our sins through the redeeming power of the blood of Christ.

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 50

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 50
-Roy Lessin, Meeting in the Meadow
Offer to God thanksgiving…Whoever offers praise glorifies Me (Psalm 50:14, 23).

The Bible statement, “In Him we live, and move, and have our being.” is found in Acts 17. It was spoken by the Apostle Paul. It has some similarities to Psalm 50. Here are a few verses from that chapter…

“God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.  Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things.”

Every person born into this world is dependent upon God. Each of us was created by Him, with the purpose of knowing Him and living for Him. Those who miss this, miss it all!

There is no god like our God! Do you know a god greater than our God? Of course not!

Who is our God?

He is from everlasting to everlasting; He is all knowing; He knows the end of something before it begins; He is flawless, errorless, sinless; He is perfect perfectness; He is everywhere you’ve been and everywhere you haven’t been; He is over there and over here, at the same time; It doesn’t matter how high you go He is above you; it doesn’t matter how strong you are, He is stronger; He is never on the wrong side or the losing side; He is the Lord God almighty!

Do you know any other god like that? Of course not!

How do you respond to such an amazing God?

Here are three ways:
  1. THANKSGIVING: Appreciation for what God does
  2. PRAISE: Celebration for who God is
  3. WORSHIP: Adoration for all God does and is
Insight: Every favor, every blessing, every gift that God has given to you has come freely, by grace. Thanksgiving, praise and worship are your gifts back to Him.

Insight: Give your life to the One who is All Wise, He’ll know what to do with it; Give your heart to the One who is Pure Love, He'll know how to care for it; Give your future to the One who is Forever Faithful, He’ll know how to secure it.
