A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 58
-Roy Lessin, Meeting in the Meadow
Then at last everyone will say,“There truly is a reward for those who live for God;
surely there is a God who judges justly here on earth” (Psalm 58:11 NLT).
In Psalm 58 we discover more about how the enemy works and
how the human heart resists the ways of God, while manifesting the
characteristics of wickedness.
The Psalm ends with the reminder that better things are yet
to come. As we await the coming of the Lord with patient endurance, we can be
certain that God’s righteous justice will have the final say over all things.
The importance of patient endurance brings to mind the
following story…
Back when foreign travel was done by ship, a missionary was
returning home after being away for many years. He was standing on deck when
his homeland came into view. His excitement grew as he began to realize he
would soon be placing his feet upon the land he loved so much.
As the ship docked the missionary noticed a large cheering
crowd gathered to greet the ship’s arrival. His heart beat faster. Soon
balloons filled the sky as a band began to play. To add to the excitement, a
red carpet was rolled out upon the gangplank. And then it happened! As the
missionary turned to exit the ship, ropes were placed on both sides of the deck
to keep back the passengers. Suddenly, the crowd cheered even louder as a man
began to descend the red-carpeted gangplank.
Realizing that all the commotion was for a celebrity, the
missionary grew sad and quietly hung his head in disappointment. It was in that
moment that he heard the voice of the Lord lovingly speaking to his hurting
heart…
“There is no one to greet you. No red carpet. No balloons.
No band. No cheering crowd for you. It’s okay. Just remember, you’re not home
yet!”
Insight: In this you greatly rejoice, though now
for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that
the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than
gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor,
and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ (1 Peter 1:6-7 NKJV).
