A
Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 65

Praise is
awaiting You, O God, in Zion; And to You the vow shall be performed. O You who
hear prayer, To You all flesh will come. Iniquities prevail against
me; As for our transgressions, You will provide atonement for them.
Blessed is the man You choose, And cause to approach You, That he may dwell in
Your courts. We shall be satisfied with the goodness of Your house, Of Your
holy temple. By awesome deeds in righteousness You will answer us, O God of our
salvation, You who are the confidence of all the ends of the earth, And of the
far-off seas; Who established the mountains by His strength, Being
clothed with power; You who still the noise of the seas, The noise
of their waves, And the tumult of the peoples (Psalm 65:1-7).
It’s hard to know the number of prayers that are spoken each day to gods that cannot answer and cannot hear. These are the same gods with eyes that cannot see and mouths that cannot speak. No wonder David filled the Psalms with praise to the only God that hears and answers prayer.
David not only praised God for hearing and answering prayer, but also for the ways in which God answered prayer. It’s as though David was excited about prayer because he couldn’t wait to see what God would do and how He would do it.
Psalm 65 opens wide the door of prayer and the benefits and blessings it brings to us because of the atoning sacrifice of Jesus’ shed blood upon the cross.
BLESSEDNESS
The greatest blessing anyone can receive is to be in the Lords’ presence, seated at His table, enjoying His company as you fellowship with one another.
It is here that your heart is fully satisfied, your soul is fully fortified, and your spirit is fully edified.
GOODNESS
Goodness is ours because God is good. He will not answer prayer with something bad, with something meager, with something fake, with something unkind, or with something that is ungracious.
AWESOMENESS
God is more than can be spoken, imagined, defined or expressed. Every detail of God is overwhelmingly awesome. He is exceedingly, abundantly, above all we could ask or think! Our eyes have not seen, our ears have not heard, neither has it entered into our hearts what God has prepared for those who love Him. God is “WOW Father”, “WOW Son”, and “WOW Holy Spirit”!
CONFIDENCE
The confidence God gives us in prayer produces security not uncertainty, boldness not timidity, hope not despair, trust not doubt. We have confidence because God has accepted us, because we are His children, and because He welcomes and invites us to pray.
QUIETNESS
Prayers are requests, not solutions; petitions, not suggestions; supplications, not manipulations. Prayer is fervency, not indifference; a cry, not a conflict; a surrender, not a debate. Prayer is stillness, not striving; it is trust, not impatience; it is dependency, not self-reliance.
Insight: Every answer to prayer comes from God’s heart, for God’s glory, and for our good.
Insight: Confidence keeps us from holding back in prayer.
