Unto You, Part 6: Wise Men and Their Gifts

Unto You, Part 6: Wise Men and Their Gifts
-Roy Lessin, Meeting in the Meadow

The long journey of the Wise Men from the east brought them to the place where the young child Jesus lived. Even though He was the King of the Jews, they didn’t find Him clothed in fine silk, but in a common garment. They didn’t find Him in a plush palace chamber, but in the room of a simple house. They didn’t find Him under the service of attendants and the watchful eyes of palace guards, but under the tender watch-care of His mother. Yet, they came before Jesus in humility and bowed before Him as King…they came with adoration and worshiped Him as Messiah…they came with praise and honored Him as Lord. They came with joyful spirits and received full hearts…they came with material blessings and received spiritual blessings…they came with gifts and received heaven’s greatest gift of all.

The gifts they brought to Jesus were gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Gold was a gift fit for kings and those of royal blood. It was fitting for Jesus because He was of the royal line of David, and would sit upon David’s throne forever. Jesus is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. Frankincense was a spice used in the making of the incense for the tabernacle. When used, it gave off a wonderful fragrance. It was a fitting gift for Jesus because He is the God-Man, the only One worthy of our worship, adoration, and our praise. Myrrh was an important element used in embalming. It was a fitting gift for Jesus because it spoke of His purpose in coming to earth from heaven. He came to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many.

God has given His greatest gift to us, we need only to receive Him. The only gift that is fitting for us to give to Him today is the gift of ourselves, wholly, once and for all. Like the Wise Men, we can come before Him and bow in surrender, in honor, in humility, in gratitude, in worship, and in praise. His first coming to earth has passed, and His work on the cross is finished. When we come to Him today He is seated in the heavens at the right hand of His Father. He is glorified and exalted, and we bow before His majesty and await His soon return.

And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh (Matthew 2:11 NKJV).
