A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 106

Praise the Lord! Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever. Who can utter the mighty acts of the Lord? Who can declare all His praise? Blessed are those who keep justice, And he who does righteousness at all times! Remember me, O Lord, with the favor You have toward Your people Oh, visit me with Your salvation, That I may see the benefit of Your chosen ones, That I may rejoice in the gladness of Your nation, That I may glory with Your inheritance. We have sinned with our fathers, We have committed iniquity, We have done wickedly. Our fathers in Egypt did not understand Your wonders; They did not remember the multitude of Your mercies, But rebelled by the sea—the Red Sea.
Nevertheless He saved them for His name’s sake, That He might make His mighty power known. He rebuked the Red Sea also, and it dried up;
So He led them through the depths, As through the wilderness. He saved them from the hand of him who hated them, And redeemed them from the hand of the enemy (Psalm 106:1-10).

In summing up Psalm 106, two things come to mind…

What happened to Israel (how they were treated by their enemies) mattered to God.

What happened to God (how He was treated by His people) didn’t matter to Israel.

Yet, even in Israel’s turning away from God, God’s love pursued and disciplined them, His goodness provided and cared for them, and His mercy forgave and restored them. How glorious are His ways with us!
As we think about our spiritual development and our daily walk with God, we need to see things from His point of view. As we do, His plan and purpose for our lives will become known, understood, and enjoyed as we seek to please Him.

Here are four common stages of spiritual development that commonly take place in a seeker’s life. The seeker in the following illustration is named “Earnest” (Earnest represents each of us)…

Stage one—ME/ME:
Earnest, like each of us, is born into the world with selfishness in his heart. He wants his own way and will sin to get it. Earnest is focused upon himself—his needs, his problems, his relationships, and his interests. The loudest sound within Earnest is “me”! “What about me” is his theme song—what about my dreams, my desires, my longings, my plans, my happiness, my future!” God’s answer to “me” in Earnest is Jesus.

Stage two—ME & JESUS:
One day, Earnest hears the Gospel, repents, receives Jesus as his Savior and is born again.
Earnest’s life is now about “me and Jesus!” Earnest is excited about all the good things Jesus is doing for him. Jesus is blessing him, answering his prayers, and helping him in so many ways.

Stage three—JESUS & ME:
Because Jesus is doing so much for Earnest:
Earnest wants to do more for Jesus. He wants to tell others about Jesus. Earnest becomes busy for Jesus. Earnest’s life is now about “Jesus and me.” Many people notice and celebrate Earnest’s ministry for Jesus.

Stage four—JESUS/JESUS:
Even though “Earnest’s ministry” is being celebrated by others, there is a disposition remaining within Earnest that needs to change.
The Holy Spirit begins drawing Earnest’s heart to a place much greater, much deeper, and much higher than “Jesus and me”. That place is, “Jesus, Jesus”.

Which stage best describes you?
Me, Me
Me and Jesus
Jesus and Me
Jesus, Jesus

“Jesus, Jesus” is where God wants each of our hearts to be! God’s will, God’s plan, and God’s purpose is that Jesus has the preeminence!
Jesus at the center of all things within us—Jesus’ life, Jesus’ love, Jesus’ presence, Jesus’ lordship, as He lives His life through us.

Paul said it this way in Galatians 2:20…
“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”

Insight: The depth of our spiritual development is not based upon how long we’ve been a follower of Jesus, but on how complete our obedience and surrender is to His Lordship.

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 105

Oh, give thanks to the Lord!
Call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples!
Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him; Talk of all His wondrous works!
Glory in His holy name; Let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the Lord!
Seek the Lord and His strength; Seek His face evermore!
Remember His marvelous works which He has done, His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth (Psalm 105:1-5).

Our glorious, wonderful, marvelous God made you, loves you, cares for you, and provides for you.

Sing to Him, talk to Him, thank Him, call upon Him and make Him known.

One of the most meaningful ways to know Him and to make Him known is through His names. Each name of God will take you deeper into the knowledge of Him. His name is above all names!

The following is a list of God’s names that appear throughout the Psalms. Each name reveals a different aspect of His steadfast love for you.

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 104

He causes the grass to grow for the cattle,
And vegetation for the service of man,
That he may bring forth food from the earth,
And wine that makes glad the heart of man,
Oil to make his face shine,
And bread which strengthens man’s heart (Psalm 104:14-15).

It was 1971 when I became one of the founders of DaySpring Cards. I retired in 2008. During those thirty-seven years I had the opportunity to help create many products that brought God’s heart to others—including cards, stationery, tracts, gift items, wall decor and books.

As the business grew, it became a bigger and bigger challenge to keep pace with the demand for new products. I began to feel the pressure to keep up with the schedule. When new product requests from marketing landed on my desk, I didn’t see them as new opportunities to get a message out, but as “more stuff” to do.

It was during this time that my Bible reading brought me to Psalm 104. When I came to verse 15 (wine that makes glad the heart of man, Oil to make his face shine, And bread which strengthens man’s heart.”) it immediately got my attention!

As I pondered what was being said, I sensed the Lord speaking to my heart about my work attitude. In a very reassuring way, the Lord moved my focus away from numbers and deadlines, back to where my heart needed to be. I was reminded that the purpose behind starting our company was to make Christ known to our generation through the printed page, and to encourage, and comfort God’s people.

The spiritual significance of three key words in Verse 15 (wine, oil, and bread) made the difference in my life at that time…

WINE represents the joy and gladness the Holy Spirit brings to our spiritual lives.

OIL represents the radiant presence of the Lord upon our countenance.

BREAD represents the strength and nourishment of the Word of God as we receive it into our hearts.

These three words changed my whole perspective on the creative process. I stopped seeing product development as “more stuff”. Instead, each new product became an opportunity to create new wine, anointing oil, and fresh bread.

Insight: Whatever Kingdom work God calls you to do, there will always be opportunities to bring new wine to the thirsty, anointing oil to refresh the weary and fresh bread to feed needy hearts.

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 103

Bless the Lord, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget not all His benefits:
Who forgives all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases,
Who redeems your life from destruction,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,
Who satisfies your mouth with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagles (Psalm 103:1-5).

If you’re looking for spiritual treasures in God’s Word, you can consider Psalm 103 a goldmine! This Psalm gathers the wonders of God’s goodness and deposits them within our hearts like golden nuggets of joy. The generosity of His goodness is overwhelming!

In the first five verses alone the following seven benefits are revealed:
*Forgiveness of all sins.
*Healing of all diseases.
*Redemption from destruction.
*Crowned with lovingkindness.
*Crowned with tender mercies
*Satisfied with good things.
*Renewed like the eagles.

As a young believer, someone shared with me God’s benefits found in Psalm 103. The third verse became one of my favorite promises and proclamations in the Bible. Throughout the years my faith has been strengthened, my hope has been renewed, and my heart has been comforted because of this amazing passage of Scripture.

Why do we ask God to forgive us when we have sinned? Because God is merciful. God forgives because His Hebrew name is Yahweh Hessed, meaning God of forgiveness.

Why do we ask God for healing when we are sick? Because God is all-powerful. God heals because His Hebrew name is Yahweh Rapha, meaning the Lord who heals.

Some look around, see the heartaches of life and ask, “How can there be a loving God?"

My question about life is the opposite…
When I look around and see the sin, selfishness, and rebellion against God that is in the human heart, I ask, “How can there be so much goodness, blessing, compassion and care? How can there be grace, mercy, kindness, and forgiveness? How can there be salvation, hope, and love?"

In the light of my questions here is what I have come to see…

In heartache, I see a Healer.
In sorrow, I see a Comforter.
In darkness, I see a Light.
In suffering, I see a Burden Bearer.
In discouragement, I see a Lifter of our heads.
In need, I see an Intercessor.
In want, I see a Shepherd.
In loneliness, I see an unfailing Friend.
In grieving, I see the One who wipes away tears.
In death, I see the One who is the Resurrection and the Life!

Insight: Our hearts are not made to figure things out and come up with the answer to every question. Our hearts are made to turn to God and put our trust in Him. He may not give us the answer to every question we have, but He will meet every need we have.

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 102

Hear my prayer, O Lord, And let my cry come to You. Do not hide Your face from me in the day of my trouble; Incline Your ear to me; In the day that I call, answer me speedily (Psalm 102:1-2).

Isn’t it wonderfully amazing how prayer works! And isn’t it even more amazing that prayer is even possible!! Reading the first two verses of Psalm 102 should put hope in our hearts and boldness in our requests. The prayer does not begin with the words, “Lord, now that I have it all together, now that I’ve been good, now that I have memorized Scripture, now that I’ve given up five things I love to do…please hear me and answer my prayer.”

Instead, the prayer of Psalm 102 begins with brokenness and a burden, with humbleness and deep hurt, with pleading and earnest petition.
The only thing the prayer can offer up to God is trouble and tears. This is not a prayer that God walks away from. The opposite is true…

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed” (Psalm 34:18 NLT).

My Prayer Song

God of all, thank You for being my all-in-all.
You are my God and You are my Father.
Your supply meets my needs.
Your hand is my covering.
Your voice quiets my soul.

In my day You are my light,
Against my foes You win the fight.
Thank You, Lord, for all You do,
There is no other God like You!

God of all, thank You for being so faithful.
You are my Life and You are my Keeper.
Your presence is my joy.
Your shield is my shelter.
Sing Your love song over me.

In my day You are my light,
Against my foes You win the fight.
Thank You, Lord, for all You do,
There is no other God like You!

Insight: Our boldness in prayer is in the God who invites us to pray; Our hope in prayer is in the God who listens to prayer; Our rejoicing in prayer is in the God who answers prayer.
