A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 101

I will sing of mercy and justice; To You, O Lord, I will sing praises. I will behave wisely in a perfect way. Oh, when will You come to me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart. I will set nothing wicked before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; It shall not cling to me. A perverse heart shall depart from me; I will not know wickedness. Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, Him I will destroy; The one who has a haughty look and a proud heart, Him I will not endure. 
My eyes shall be on the faithful of the land, That they may dwell with me; He who walks in a perfect way, He shall serve me. He who works deceit shall not dwell within my house; He who tells lies shall not continue in my presence. Early I will destroy all the wicked of the land, That I may cut off all the evildoers from the city of the Lord (Psalm 101:1-8).
 
In Psalm 101 David expresses what kind of a king he wanted to be to Israel. He shares many of the moral qualities that should shape the character of every servant of the Lord. These qualities include the values, priorities, and behaviors that are pleasing to God and beneficial to the lives of others.
 
It’s a beautiful thing when the heart of God is being expressed through His people. As believers, all of us are called to be servants of the Lord and extensions of His love through our serving, giving, caring, supporting, guiding, encouraging, helping, and listening. These extensions of God’s love flow from a life that is yielded and filled with the heart of Him who came, “not to be served, but to serve.”
 
Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus (Philippians 2:3-5).
 
10 characteristics that express God’s heart to others:
 
*Tender-heartedness—showing mercy and compassion through acts of kindness.
 
*Availability—investing meaningful time with someone, even if it’s inconvenient. 
 
*Humility—taking a lowly place so someone else can be lifted higher. 
 
*Faithfulness—promises and actions that demonstrate loyalty and build trust.
 
*Graciousness—not needing a reason to express love.
 
*Wisdom—making decisions that will result in the highest good and produce the best outcome. 
 
*Truthfulness—the most direct path to real freedom.
 
*Fairness—responding to someone in a way that is righteous, just and impartial.
 
*Sincerity—the evidence that lets others know you really care.
 
*Encouragement—imparting what’s uplifting, faith building, and brings hope for the future.
 
Once, during a hot summer’s day, I needed to stop by a large discount store to buy some items for our home. The place was packed and I had to park at the far end of the parking lot. When I finished shopping I walked out of the air conditioned store pushing a full cart. As I walked across the hot pavement of the parking lot, I dreaded the thought of returning the cart to the store when I finished unloading.
 
Before I reached my car, I noticed a Christian friend unloading his cart several parking spaces from mine. I stopped to greet him and then continued on to my car. When I finished unloading, I wanted to skip returning the cart and leaving it in the parking lot instead. Just then, I saw my friend walking towards me—“Can I return your cart for you?” he asked. I couldn’t say “yes” fast enough!
 
As I watched him walk my cart back to the store, the truth of what had happened became clear…“That was Jesus returning my cart through one of His servants!”
 
Albert W. T. Orsbom wrote the following hymn as a heart-felt prayer for every servant of the Lord who desires to bring God’s heart to the heart of others.

Let the beauty of Jesus be seen in me,
All His wonderful passion and purity;
May His spirit divine all my being refine,
Let the beauty of Jesus be seen in me.
When somebody has been so unkind to you,
Some words spoken that pierces you thru and thru;
Think how He was beguiled, spat upon and reviled,
Let the beauty of Jesus be seen in you.
From the dawn of the morning to close of day,
In example in deeds and in all you say;
Lay your gifts at His feet, ever strive to keep sweet,
Let the beauty of Jesus be seen in you.
 
Insight: It is a good thing to do a good thing.
 
Insight: Every follower of the Lord should live a life worth following. 
 
"Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ" (1 Corinthians 11:1).

Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands! Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations (Psalm 100:1-5).
 
Imagine yourself wandering in the desert trying to find your way through a sandstorm. The heat is intense, you can’t see ahead of you, and your thirst is unbearable. You don’t know what to do, when suddenly, the wind stops, the sandstorm ends, and your visibility clears. A short distance in front of you is a beautiful green, fertile oasis. You see date palms, and a pool of water being fed by an underground source. Near to the pool you discover a traveler with  two camels and an abundance of supplies. Oh, how great is your joy, how deep is your wonder, how abundant is your thankfulness!
 
Psalm 100 is like an oasis to our souls in the midst of the storms of life we often walk through in a dry and thirsty land! Psalm 100 refreshes us by reminding us of who God is, renews us by proclaiming what God does, and restores our souls as we magnify His name.
 
Who God is—He is Lord, He is good, His mercy is everlasting and His truth endures to all generations.
 
What God does—He made us! We belong to Him and we are the sheep of His pasture.
 
Our response—Make a joyful shout to the Lord. Know that He is God. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before His presence with singing.
Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.
 
Our worship of the Lord’s glory is a repeated theme throughout the Psalms. In His presence our hearts are filled with words and emotions that glorify Him. He delights in our joyfulness, in our praises, in our singing, and in our thankfulness. It is His will that our obedience and service to Him flow from a heart of gladness, graciousness, and gratitude.
 
The glory of the Lord is the “true north” of all Scripture. His glory NEVER changes! Who God is and all He does is the revelation and manifestation of His glory to our hearts.

If He wasn't the Master, where would I go?
If He wasn't my Father, Who'd heal my soul?

The Lord reigns; Let the peoples tremble!
He dwells between the cherubim;
Let the earth be moved! The Lord is great in Zion,
And He is high above all the peoples. Let them praise Your great and awesome name—
He is holy. The King’s strength also loves justice;
You have established equity; You have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.
Exalt the Lord our God, And worship at His footstool…
He is holy. Moses and Aaron were among His priests, And Samuel was among those who called upon His name; They called upon the Lord, and He answered them. He spoke to them in the cloudy pillar; They kept His testimonies and the ordinance He gave them. You answered them, O Lord our God; You were to them God-Who-Forgives, Though You took vengeance on their deeds. Exalt the Lord our God, And worship at His holy hill; For the Lord our God is holy (Psalm 99:1-9).
 
 
Psalm 99 places before us the most important revelation of Scripture, our salvation! God, who is holy, has made a way for us, who are not holy, to be forgiven and cleansed from our sin. All sin! All unrighteousness!
 
Each of us who have been redeemed, can thank God from the deepest part of our being, for His grace and mercy to us. We would have no hope, no future, no comfort and no consolation if God were not the God-Who-Forgives!
 
In the beginning of the first book of the Bible, God’s love story of redemption began to be written. In the last book of the Bible, the final chapter of God’s redemptive love story is revealed. It will be a chapter that takes an eternity to write.
 
This love story of redemption is the only true love story that can be told. No one, anywhere, at any time will find redemption in any other story. Anyone who walks away from the God-Who-Forgives, will not be able to find redemption, forgiveness, or salvation behind any other door. No other gospel, no creed, no organization, no membership, no belief, no doctrine, no good work, no discipline, and no amount of effort has enough power to forgive, cleanse and wash away all sin!
 
Only the Gospel of Jesus Christ has the power to save us, only the blood of Jesus has the power to cleanse us, only the Cross of Jesus has the power to deliver us, only the Spirit of Jesus has the power to transform us, only the Truth of Jesus has the power to set us free!

God planned our salvation,
He promised our salvation,
He prepared our salvation,
He provided our salvation,
He proclaimed our salvation,
Salvation is of the Lord!

Oh, sing to the Lord a new song! For He has done marvelous things;
His right hand and His holy arm have gained Him the victory. Let the rivers clap their hands; Let the hills be joyful together before the Lord, For He is coming to judge the earth (Psalm 98:1, 8-9).
 
God has given us so much to rejoice and sing about. What a blessing music is in the heart of the redeemed! The Lord’s victory over sin, and His coming again to establish His kingdom on earth is certainly something to sing about! It’s one of the biggest, most important events recorded in Scripture. What a celebration the coming of the Lord will be! Our salvation in Jesus means we who love Him will enter into all God has prepared for us. 
 
As a new believer, at the age of 19, I became aware of Christian music for the first time. Most of the songs I heard and sang were hymns. To this day I continue to love the depth of the lyrics in classic hymns. Many hymns include the theme of the second coming of Christ. The hymn Christ is Coming From on High by Henry Ostrom is one example. (Perhaps this hymn was inspired by Psalm 98?)
 
Heirs of vic­to­ry are we
Through the Christ of Cal­va­ry;
Storms may beat and foes as­sail;
But His king­dom can­not fail.
Christ is com­ing, shout your praise;
Lo! the dawn of bet­ter days;
Christ is com­ing from on high,
Victory is ve­ry nigh;

In the early 70s I started listening to the contemporary Christian music coming out of Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa, California. The songs of that era impacted a generation! Songs about the victory of Jesus and His second coming were an important part of the Jesus People movement. Two of those songs were I Wish We’d All Been Ready by Larry Norman, and Maranatha by Chuck Girard and Love Song.

Maranatha, Maranatha, the Master's comin' home
We must prepare our hearts so we can meet Him,
Maranatha, Maranatha, the Lord is comin' back
We must be filled with love to truly greet Him.
The Master went away from us two thousand years ago. He left us with His promise to return.
How our hearts do long for Him, we miss the Master so. We must keep the faith and let the fire burn.
He left this world in tragedy, He let them take His life, He sacrificed His blood by His own choice.
When He returns in glory, He'll come to claim His flock, The Master loves the ones who know His voice.
 
The Bible is alive with the promises of Jesus’ second coming. These promises far out number the promises of His first coming. There are over 300 promises in Scripture that speak about the Lord’s return. It’s something God wants us to know about, to care about, to talk about, and to rejoice about. It is the hope of all hopes. It is the greatest ending to the greatest story ever told! It will be the one event that actually fulfills the popular saying, “It can’t get any better than that!”
 
Insight: Here are a few things we can BE as we await His return:
BE alert,
BE unafraid,
BE standing firm,
BE watchful,
BE ready,
BE faithful,
BE wise,
BE expectant.

You who love the Lord, hate evil!
He preserves the souls of His saints;
He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked.
Light is sown for the righteous,
And gladness for the upright in heart.
Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous,
And give thanks at the remembrance of His holy name (Psalm 97:10-12).
 
Our focus in Psalm 96 was upon the beauty of God’s holiness. In Psalm 97 we are reminded that the beauty of holiness has an enemy—it is the ugliness of evil. Both the love of the Lord and the fear of the Lord (Psalm 97:10 & Proverbs 8:13) will place within our hearts a hatred for evil. Evil is not a friend, it is an enemy of that which is good, righteous, holy and true.
 
Hating evil is not being negative, it’s being righteous; it’s not being unkind, it’s being loving, it’s not being mean to someone, it’s wanting the best for someone. Hating evil is not an Old Testament worldview, it’s a Bible worldview. Included in the prayer Jesus taught us is the request, “Deliver us from evil (and the Evil One).”
 
Nowhere in God’s kingdom is evil celebrated, admired, applauded, approved or desired. The Kingdom work God is doing in us and the Kingdom work Jesus did for us on the cross is to bring us out of darkness into God’s light, to cleanse us and free us from sin, and to bring us from spiritual death into spiritual life.
 
God’s will is to save, guard, nurture and protect our souls from anything that would attempt to steal, kill or destroy us. God preserves the souls of His children. He delivers us out of the hand of wickedness and bathes us in the splendor of His light.
 
Insight: The results of God’s work in us through the cross brings to us a priceless treasure, gladness of heart!
 
Insight: If the enemy has taken hold of us in any area of our lives, the Lord knows how to pry the enemy’s fingers loose and set us free from any stronghold.

Oh, worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness! (Psalm 96:9)
 
Beauty is one of those special "welcoming" words. It's a word we like to invite into our thoughts and set a table for in our hearts. We were made to identify, enjoy, and celebrate beauty.
 
Beauty is something we want to bring into the light so we can look upon it, something we want to bring into our conversation so we can talk about it, and something we want to give to others so they can be blessed by it.
 
We were made to love beautiful things—beautiful art brings us to museums; beautiful flowers draw us to gardens; beautiful sunsets draw us to the western sky; beautiful music draws us to the symphony hall.

We were made to delight in beauty, and it is the beauty of the Lord that fills us with the greatest of all joys. The Lord invites us to draw close to Him, to look upon His beautiful character, and to examine His ways. The closer we come, the more beauty we see.
 
In Isaiah 6:3 we read, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts." God the Father is holy, Jesus Christ is holy, and the Holy Spirit is holy.
 
Another way of understanding the word "holy" is "beauty." Each person of the Godhead is beautiful because each person is holy. Their character is beautiful, their nature is beautiful, their ways are beautiful, their attitudes are beautiful, their glory is beautiful, and their presence in our hearts is beautiful.
 
Every aspect of beauty is found in its fullness, in God alone. God has no stains, no impurities, and no defilement. His holiness allows us to delight in Him, enjoy Him, and behold Him in deep adoration.
 
Dr. G. Campbell Morgan once said, "The Holy Spirit is the Creator of beauty."
 
This is what the Bible says about the beauty of God's holiness:
HOLINESS is glorious (Exodus 15:11).
HOLINESS is the true identity of the True God (Exodus 15:11).
HOLINESS guarantees that God's promises are true (Psalm 89:35).
HOLINESS brings the memories that produce thankfulness (Psalm 97:12).
HOLINESS is the garment a warrior wears into victory (Psalm 110:3).
HOLINESS will always lead us in the right direction (Isaiah 35:8).
 
All the beautiful things of God are brought to our hearts by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is our beauty maker. Beauty is found wherever there is truth, wherever there is goodness, wherever there is righteousness, wherever there is love. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to pour out the beauty of the Lord upon our lives.
 
In that day the LORD of hosts will be for a crown of glory and a diadem of beauty to the remnant of His people (Isaiah 28:5 NKJV).
 
The Holy Spirit's beautiful work means He purifies us, sanctifies us, cleanses us, and washes us clean. How beautiful are His ways with us; how beautiful is His work within us as He conforms us to the image of Jesus Christ.
 
We don't need to have a big bank account to be rich. The beauty of a Godly character is that it enriches every aspect of our lives. It makes even the poorest person a wealthy person.

The wonderful thing about the beauty of the Lord is that it doesn't diminish within us through the passing years, but rather increases instead. His beauty doesn't bring less to our lives; it brings more. The magnificence of His beauty takes us to higher ground and greater depths of joy. It is the Lord's beauty that deepens our walk with Him and our love for Him.
 
 
Insight: In his book, Abba Cry, Don Lessin shares this observation about the beautiful atmosphere his wife brought to their home, “Often, when my wife is working in the house, I hear a soft and tender sound coming from her inmost being. In the midst of doing dishes, ironing clothes, or when she is hurrying about to get something done, I hear the word, “Jesus” being spoken.”

Oh come, let us sing to the Lord!
Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms. For the Lord is the great God,
And the great King above all gods. In His hand are the deep places of the earth; The heights of the hills are His also. The sea is His, for He made it; And His hands formed the dry land. Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. For He is our God,
And we are the people of His pasture, And the sheep of His hand. Today, if you will hear His voice: “Do not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion, As in the day of trial in the wilderness, When your fathers tested Me; They tried Me, though they saw My work. For forty years I was grieved with that generation, And said, ‘It is a people who go astray in their hearts, And they do not know My ways. ‘So I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter My rest’ ” (Psalm 95:1-11).
 
Praying Psalm 95
 
Lord, how wonderful You are, how gracious, how caring. You are my song. You and You alone are my Rock of salvation. I find my strength, my foundation, and my hope in You. Your mighty hand upholds me, Your ways direct me, Your presence sustains me. You are my limitless, unending source and supply.

Because You are my Rock, I am secure.
 
Lord, I build my life upon You. I am so thankful there are no flaws in You, no imperfections, no inconsistencies, no sinking sand, and that there will never be a time when I will need to move to safer ground.
 
I worship You, Lord, and bow before Your majesty. Because of You I have a song to sing, praise to bring, and a heart full of gratefulness for every good thing that comes from You. Thank you for revealing Your heart to mine, for teaching me Your ways, and for making it possible for me to enter into Your rest.
 
How blessed I am knowing You look after me in such caring ways. Your eye is upon me as a watchful Shepherd. You bring me into quiet resting places, into green pastures, and into the places that bring refreshment and joy. There is no god like You!

Nowhere!
 
Thank You for placing your hand upon me, and for sheltering me under the shadow of your wings.

Father, keep my heart tender. I desire to please You in my attitudes and actions. Help me to represent You well, in way that Honors Your wonderful name.
 
Amen!

He who planted the ear, shall He not hear?
He who formed the eye, shall He not see?
Unless the Lord had been my help,
My soul would soon have settled in silence.

If I say, “My foot slips,” Your mercy, O Lord, will hold me up.

In the multitude of my anxieties within me,
Your comforts delight my soul (Psalm 94:17-19).
 
When God created Adam and Eve He made them with the ability to perfectly relate to each other, to the world around them, and to God who created them. They were wonderfully made (body, soul, and spirit).
 
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul (mind, will, and emotions) (Genesis 2:7).
 
Isn’t it wonderful that God speaks and we can hear His voice, God leads and we can see His footsteps, God instructs and we can know His ways.
 
Isn’t it wonderful that His Word is living and life-giving. We can eat it like bread. We can taste it like honey and be fully persuaded that the Lord is good.
 
Isn’t it wonderful that His Spirit is joined to our spirit, that we are one in the Spirit, and that His Spirit is our Helper and will lead us into all truth.
 
Isn’t it wonderful that our spiritual ears can hear what the Spirit is saying, that we can recognize His voice of peace, that we can be reassured we belong to the Lord, and that we are members of His family and joint-heirs with Christ.
 
Isn’t it wonderful that our spiritual eyes can see the beauty of the Lord, that we can see the light of His Word being a lamp unto our feet, that we can see what is unseen, and that we can see the mighty hand of God moving in miraculous ways in signs and wonders as He touches the lives of others.
 
Isn’t it wonderful that we have the mind of Christ, that His thoughts can be our thoughts, that His wisdom can be known in our everyday decisions, and that His plans can be revealed as we seek to know Him and do His will.
 
Insight: Your soul is made to be delighted in God.

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 93

The Lord reigns, He is clothed with majesty;
The Lord is clothed,
He has girded Himself with strength.
Surely the world is established, so that it cannot be moved. Your throne is established from of old;
You are from everlasting. The floods have lifted up, O Lord, The floods have lifted up their voice;
The floods lift up their waves. The Lord on high is mightier Than the noise of many waters, Than the mighty waves of the sea. Your testimonies are very sure; Holiness adorns Your house,
O Lord, forever (Psalm 93:1-5).
 
There are so many ways to describe Psalm 93:
 
It is like stepping into a refreshing stream on a warm summer day. 
 
It fills our souls with an abundance of living water.
 
It helps us turn our eyes away from the ugliness of evil and bask in the light of better and higher things.
 
It strengthens us in our weakness, emboldens us in our timidity.
 
It makes us so heavenly minded we can be of some earthly good.
 
It says to the busy one, “come aside and rest awhile”, and to the troubled one “I am your peace!”
 
It will push back all the clamoring of the world, all its yelling and arguing, all its contention and strife, and replace it with the calming reassuring voice of our loving Heavenly Father.
 
It steadies our feet as we walk daily through a world that is shaking, a culture that is crumbling, and a value system that is rapidly deteriorating into confusion.
 
It reassures us that the One in whom we have put our trust, is ALMIGHTY!
 
It declares with absolute certainty that the Lord reigns and has absolute authority over all things.
 
It encourages us to unpack our bags at the house of holiness and delight in the company of His Majesty the King.
 
Insight: I recall someone saying, “Put your elbows on the windowsill of heaven and look upon the beauty and glory of the Lord, and in the light of His majesty go forth to meet the day!”
 
Insight: God knows He reigns and is in control, He just wants us to know!

A Devotional Journey Through the Psalms: Psalm 92

It is good to give thanks to the Lord, And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High; To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning, And Your faithfulness every night, On an instrument of ten strings, On the lute, And on the harp, With harmonious sound. For You, Lord, have made me glad through Your work; I will triumph in the works of Your hands. To declare that the Lord is upright; He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him (Psalm 92:1-4, 15).
 
There are bad things and good things, right things and wrong things, true things and false things. The good things, the right things and the true things will please God and help you. They will build you up, not tear you down; they will hold you up, not let you fall; they will fill you up, not leave you empty. Good things edify, bad things destroy; right things succeed, wrong things harm; true things give clarity, false things mislead. 
 
The good, the right, and the true come to us from the heart of God. God alone is good. God is good to us, not because we are good, but because He is.

God’s goodness is pleasant and pleasing, pure and perfect, precious and prosperous. His goodness is filled with benefits, over and over again.
 
God’s goodness to us, will bring good responses from us. These good responses include:

*Giving Him thanks for the good He has done.
*Singing songs of praise.
*Declaring His lovingkindness and faithfulness.
*Praising Him for the work of His hands.
 
Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfies the longing soul and fills the hungry soul with goodness (Psalm 107:8-9).
 
Insight: Praising God for the work of His hands also includes the work He did in making you!
 
Insight: God is good, God is love, God is holy. God’s goodness is always expressed in a holy, loving way.

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.”
Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from the perilous pestilence.
He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you.
Only with your eyes shall you look,
And see the reward of the wicked.
Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place,
No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;
For He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you in all your ways.
In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,
The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.
“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him.
With long life I will satisfy him,
And show him My salvation" (Psalm 91).
 
What a powerful, meaningful, encouraging, comforting, faith building Psalm! During the pandemic, Psalm 91 was a landing place of peace for many troubled hearts. 
 
Psalm 91 is not only packed with promises for every believer, but its promises can be turned into proclamations and prayers, especially during difficult times. One example is the Prayer of Refuge. It is written by Sarah Kelley. Sarah is a servant of the Lord who has touched, blessed, and enriched the lives of a multitude by her writing, singing, and personal expressions of the Father’s heart through her Blessings Book Store in West Monroe, Louisiana.

Lord, thank You for providing a secret place for Your children.
 
Because of this, I live under your shadow of protection. You are my refuge, my fortress, my God and I trust in You. You deliver me from the enemy's tricks and plagues. You wrap Your arms around me and comfort me. Your faithfulness is my shield and armor. Because of this, I am not afraid, at any time. Even in a disaster, with thousands falling around me, I remain strong. With my eyes, I will see you punish the wicked. You, most high and holy God, are my place of safety.

So, evil will not prevail against me and disease cannot come near my home. Lord, thank You for giving Your angels orders to protect and defend me. They even keep me from stumbling.

I walk through dangers and trample them under my feet.
 
Lord, I am Yours and I love you; I will call on you in times of trouble; You answer me, deliver and honor me. Your presence is with me and I will enjoy the fullness of Your salvation all the days of my life. 
Amen.

Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations (Psalm 90:1).
 
The following illustration will help us gain a fresh understanding of the significance of having the Lord as our dwelling place…

Imagine a hiker is on a walk in the mountains. It's a nice day in late fall when he begins his hike.

Unexpectedly, the weather changes and the temperature drops. Storm clouds gather. The hiker begins to look for shelter. Ahead of him, a few hundred yards off the main trial, he notices a log house.

When he arrives at the house he knocks on the door. There is no answer. As he wonders what to do, the storm begins to unleash its furry. Temperatures plunge, the wind increases and snow begins to fall. 

The house is the hiker's only chance to escape the storm. He walks around the house and looks through a few windows. To his delight, he sees food supplies on the shelves, bottled water on the kitchen table, blankets on a chair, warm clothing hanging from hooks on the wall, and a tall pile of firewood next to the fireplace.

Everything the hiker needs is in the house: food, drink, dry clothing, warmth, comfort, shelter.

But he can't get in. He has no key, and the windows and doors are locked. Frustrated, he decides to take another look through a different window. To his surprise, he sees the figure of a man sleeping in an easy chair in the corner of the living room. The hiker realizes that the things he needs can be available to him if he can awaken the man and get him to open the door and invite him in.

The hiker pounds loudly at the door and looks through the window again. He sees the man beginning to stir and get to his feet. The hiker knocks again, excited that help is on the way!

The story of the hiker is not an illustration of what our relationship with God looks like as believers in Jesus Christ. In fact, it is the opposite. We are not trying to gain entrance into God's house, and we do not need to be "pounding on the door of His promises" hoping to get His attention so we can receive what we need and find shelter from the storms of life.
As a believer in Jesus Christ, you are already in the house. You can't plead your way in, you can't buy your way in, and you can't earn your way in.

God welcomed you and brought you into His place of refuge through grace the day you gave your heart to Him.

You are in Christ, not separated from Him; you are a friend, not a stranger; you are an heir, not an alien; you are a child, not an orphan, you are in the household of faith, not an outsider.

As someone who is in God's family, you have complete access to all God has provided for you through His Son—every spiritual blessing is yours; you are complete in Him; He is your life; He is in you and you are in Him; He is your "yes" to every promise.

When you bring your needs to God in prayer, ask, not as an outsider looking in, but as a child who is living in your Father's house. Ask in full assurance of faith. And as you ask, hear Him say, "You will be satisfied with the fullness of My house. Come drink at the stream of My pleasures."

At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you ( John 14:20 NKJV).

Insight: God’s house is not a building, it’s you!

I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever;
With my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations. For I have said, “Mercy shall be built up forever; Your faithfulness You shall establish in the very heavens.” And the heavens will praise Your wonders, O Lord;
Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the saints. O Lord God of hosts, Who is mighty like You, O Lord? Your faithfulness also surrounds You.
“But My faithfulness and My mercy shall be with him, And in My name his horn shall be exalted.
Nevertheless My lovingkindness I will not utterly take from him, Nor allow My faithfulness to fail (Psalm 89: 1-2,5,8,24,33).

In our devotional journey through the Psalms, God’s faithfulness is a strong theme. In Psalm 89 it is used six different times. Here is what we discover about God’s faithfulness in these six verses…
 
God’s faithfulness will never fail or disappear. Every generation from the beginning of time has known and experienced God’s faithfulness. Today, everyone in the body of Christ can raise a banner proclaiming “God is Faithful”. His faithfulness is not an ideal, but a reality. His faithfulness surrounds you, and is with you on every path He leads you and in every trial you walk through. God’s faithfulness is fail proof. HE WILL NOT FAIL!
 
Our response to God’s faithfulness in our lives is a simple one, it is TRUST! A nineteenth-century writer got it right when she said, “Perfect obedience would be perfect happiness, if we had full confidence in the One we were obeying.”
 
In our “even though” situations of life our trust in the Lord’s faithfulness can remain firm:

Trust Him as you take His hand, even though it means letting go of what you’re holding on to.

Trust Him as you please His heart, even though it may not please others.

Trust Him as you wait for His time, even though your desire is to get it done now.

Trust Him as you obey His Word, even though you hear something different that is popular.

Trust Him as you follow His path, even though you see a valley ahead.

Trust Him as He shows you His wisdom, even though you would do it differently.
